How to setup Virtual SMTP Relay Services on Windows Server 2008 R2

How to Install / Configure SMTP Service on Windows 2008 Server:


  • Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Server Manager
  • In the Server Manager window, select "Features" node on the left hand side
       
  • Click on "Add Feature" link on the right hand side
  • It will open a box where we can select features to add. Select "SMTP Server" from the list.
       
  • A new pop-up windows will be open as soon as you select the check box for “SMTP Server”. Click on "Add Required Role Services" on this popup box.
       
  • Click Next and install the SMTP feature.
  • Now, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 Manager
       
  • You will see the SMTP virtual server entry on expanding tree on the left and side.
  • Right click on "SMTP Virtual Server #1" and select "Properties" from context menu.   
  • Select the check box "Enable Logging", if you want to enable SMTP logs. If you enable logging, make sure to click on "Properties" button to set the location of log files.
       
  • Click on "Access" tab and click on "Relay" button.

  • Now you need to add IP address which should be allowed to send / relay emails using this SMTP server.
  • Click on "Add" button to add IP addresses.

  • Click on "Message" tab and change values for "Limit Message Size to" and "Limit Session Size to" as below
       
  • Click OK to close the properties box.
  • Select "SMTP Virtual Server #1" and restart the services (stop and then start) to make changes effective.
       

Note:
 Make sure to open Port 25 for the outer world in Firewall for properly relay emails from SMTP server.
